Pain & Inflammation

Overview

Chronic inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, asthma, cardiovascular disease, some cancers and psoriasis are major health issues that seriously affect quality of life and are a significant burden on health care systems around the world.

Through its expertise in free radicals and associated diseases, the Centre is providing:
  • an understanding of the free radical basis underpinning inflammatory diseases, and
  • designing, synthesising and testing new pharmaceuticals for pain and inflammation treatment.

Research Projects

The Pain and Inflammation research initiative seeks to understand the biochemistry behind pain and inflammation, and develop new pharmaceuticals and treatments for these conditions.

Centre researchers are working on a number of projects within this initiative including:
  • New research and technology to understand the key mechanisms and reaction kinetics of crucial free radicals, reactive oxygen precursors and cellular processes involved in pain and inflammation;
  • Novel therapies and preventative treatments including the synthesis of new pharmaceuticals to alleviate conditions such as chronic inflammation; and
  • New methods to assess the effectiveness of Centre produced lead compounds that have future potential as pharmaceuticals.
